Spanish
Spanish
At Ashbury Meadow, we believe that the teaching of a modern foreign language broadens pupils’ interest, understanding and curiosity of the world, whilst providing them with a means by which to communicate with others.
Spanish is the modern foreign language taught at Ashbury Meadow from Years 3 to Year 6, with some introduction to basic words and phrases in Key Stage 1. We use the Language Angels scheme which has been adapted by school to create a sprial curriculum in which children revisit and build on previously learned knowledge and skills.
Pupils are taught to develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning Spanish:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
Children learn vocabulary, grammar and phonics for six different topics each year. This equates to one topic every half term. All children in Key Stage 2 have a weekly timetabled lesson of at least thirty minutes. Spanish is also revisited in short sessions throughout the week to consolidate knowledge, and to ensure that new language is retained.
Spanish lessons are designed to motivate, captivate and interest children. Children are given the opportunity to work as a class, as individuals and as part of a group depending on the learning task. SEND children have access to the curriculum through variation of task, grouping, or support from an adult.
Acquisition and recall of new learning is supported by the use of knowledge organisers for each topic. These knowledge organisers, which are displayed in the classroom and in pupils’ books, show the essential vocabulary that will be learnt during a unit. Displays of the topics being taught in Spanish are displayed in classrooms.
Children are assessed at the end of each topic, at the end of each half term, using skills assessments. This form of assessment enables us to determine the learning and progression of all pupils in the key language learning skills, as well as monitoring their progress against the 12 attainment targets stipulated in the DfE Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2.
