Year 2 2024 - 2025
Miss Fraser
Ms Sheikh
Welcome to Year 2, we are so excited to welcome all the children back for Spring Term. The year 2 teachers are Miss Fraser (2F) and Ms Sheikh (2S). The teaching assistants are Miss Butterworth (2F), Mrs Hussain (2F) and Miss Almeida (2S).
What we are learning this half term:
This half term, children will be focussing on ‘Holidays Now and Then’ in History and answering the question ‘What holiday activities are the same now as they were in the past?’. In Science – we will be learning about the Animals including Humans: Survival. In English, children will focus on producing their own traditional tale with a twist based on the story ‘Little Red Reading Hood’. In Maths, we are learning all about mass, temperature and pictograms. Year 2 will also be creating their own natural landscape paintings in Art.
P.E.
Year 2 children will take part in weekly P.E lessons every Wednesday afternoon with our City in the Community sports coach. Children must come to school in their PE kits (white top, black trousers/shorts/leggings and appropriate trainers) on this day. In Spring 1, Year 2 will also take part in weekly dance lessons every Thursday morning. Children must come to school in trainers on this day.
Phonics
In the spring term, your child will have daily phonics or spelling lessons. At Ashbury Meadow, we follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. Please see the Little Wandle parent page for access to videos and resources to support your child at home with phonics. https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
Further information can also be found on our phonics page of the website.
Reading
Children will be given two books a week to read at home. The first book will be matched to their phonic ability and will be set on the Collins Ebook app. The second book will be a sharing book. This is a book the children have chosen themselves. They may not be able to read this independently however it encourages them to develop a love for reading. Children should read daily for 10 minutes. Children will be given a reading record to record when they have read to an adult at home. Please sign the reading record when you have read at home with your child or if they have read independently.
Homework
Children will be expected and encouraged to keep up with their weekly home tasks. These include:
Reading as outlined above.
Maths homework, which links to the topics we are learning in class, will be set on Mathletics every Friday. Your child will see 2-3 assigned tasks on their account upon logging in. Children should also be accessing Times Table Rockstar’s and Numbots at home whenever they please.
Spellings will be sent home and need to be practiced for our weekly class spelling tests on Friday.
Knowledge organisers can be found attached to our class page where the children will find lots of new facts about their topics. These knowledge organisers are banks of information and include facts, pictures and key vocabulary that the children can refer to throughout each of these topics. Children should spend 10 minutes each week looking at these to prepare for new learning and revisit prior learning.
Times tables
By the end of Year 2, children need to know all times table facts for the 2-, 5- and 10-times tables. We will practise regularly and test in school, but it is crucial that children are practising their times tables at home daily for rapid recall. To support them with this, please make sure your child is regularly practising on Times Table Rockstars as part of their homework.
Your child's logins will be stuck in the cover of their reading records.
