Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil premium is funding allocated to schools for the purpose of boosting the attainment of pupils from low-income families. It is intended to enable schools to provide targeted support to help each child reach their full potential.

Funding is allocated for children who are looked-after by the Local Authority (CLA) and for every child who is registered for free school meals.

Who is eligible for Free School Meals?

Children can have Free School Meals if their parents receive any of the following:

  • Income Support

  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • the guaranteed element of Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

  • Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

It is really important to make sure all children who qualify are registered for Free School Meals, even if you choose to send a packed lunch for them. Please ask us if you think you may be entitled!

How can you register for Free School Meals?

To register for Free School Meals you need to complete an Education Benefit form.

You can access this by:

Bringing your National Insurance number to school and asking a member of pastoral support to check for you, this will automatically be done when your child is admitted

Visiting the Manchester City Council website

Asking for a form at the job centre

We use Pupil Premium in many ways to support pupils, including:

Schools have the freedom to spend the Premium in a way they think will best support their most vulnerable pupils.

At Ashbury Meadow, we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life and have used research to support our choices in how we use our funding. These include:

Subsidising school trips and visitors to school to develop cultural capital

Training staff to implement high quality teaching and learning

Providing well trained teaching assistants to support fluency in reading throughout the school

Providing resources that stimulate and challenge pupils' learning and support the cultural diversity of our school

Providing a well qualified pastoral support team, who work alongside all families to offer support from the start of your journey at Ashbury Meadow.

These are just a few examples of the way Pupil Premium is used at Ashbury Meadow. If you would like more information, please ask us!
