Art & Design

Art at Ashbury Meadow offers opportunities to build upon the knowledge and skills learnt in EYFS, in the specific area of learning ‘Expressive Arts and Design’. The spiral curriculum overtime enables  pupils to develop in depth the skills required for personal artistic expression, whilst also improving their historical and cultural awareness of different artistic styles. Throughout the school, pupils develop their knowledge and skills by completing sequenced units of work and where possible cross-curricular links to embed learning in other curriculum areas are planned, or standalone units are taught focusing on the art elements using a variety of resources. We aim to enable pupils to become more proficient by for example, in sculpture, keeping the medium the same but returning each year to develop more complex skills in the use of it.

Artist and craftsperson-focused topics provide pupils with the invaluable understanding of art in our world. Whole school art days and celebration activities allow pupils to develop an understanding of art in different cultures.

At Ashbury Meadow, art teaching is split into four main aspects during a unit:

  1. Knowledge of process and context
  2. Skills of designing and developing ideas
  3. Skills of making art, craft and design
  4. Skills of judgement and evaluation

Pupils are inspired by work of a diverse range of artists and craftspeople to create their own artistic designs, fostering individual expression, creativity and analysis when pupils evaluate their work.
