Miss Nicholson

Year two teacher, phase leader

Welcome to year 2,

If you’re looking for what we are learning in the Summer Term, you have come to the right place!

This term our topic is ‘Castles and Knights’. See the castle ahead? Get ready to invade its might walls! Shoot a projectile with an archer’s aim! Head across the drawbridge, over the moat and up to the top of the tower…

We will be learning all about what castles in the UK were like in the past and we will even be visiting one near us; Chirk Castle! Return to our website later to view the pictures! What will we find there? Let’s build a brand new castle with a huge tower…Whose is the tallest? Can you measure it?

The children will be securing and mastering their understanding of methods for calculating addition, subtraction, division and multiplication questions. They will be applying their understanding of these four operations to problem solving. Year 2 will also be covering the units of time and shape in this term. If you would like any information on how to help your child at home with their calculations please do not hesitate to ask a member of the year 2 team. Please ensure that your child practises their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

In Literacy we will be writing Recounts. First we will be focusing on what makes a good recount by looking at the features of different examples. We will find out that recounts retell an event and is usually written in the First Person. We will also practice using time-openers such as First, Next, Then, After that and Finally to sequence our ideas into 'Chronological order'. After our trip we will have a go at writing our own recounts, making our writing the best we can using all the features that we have identified.

Children will be investigating animals in their habitats by looking for minibeasts in the school grounds. We will be presenting the data we find in tally charts and pictograms. We will then move on to look at animals including humans; learning about their life cycles and how we can stay healthy.

Physical Education

We love PE in Year 2! We will be practising invasion games. Remember PE kit should be a plain white t shirt and black/blue shorts or joggers. Some of the lessons will be outside and so it is advisable to bring a sports jacket and joggers every week. PE kits should be in school every Monday.

A music company will be coming in to school to develop the children’s musical skills. We alternate music sessions every Wednesday between the two year 2 classes.

Homework and spelling

Homework is given out on Fridays. Please return homework on a Monday.

We send out spellings on a Tuesday for the test on Friday. The spelling sheets will have a rule to learn at the top and then some example words where the rule is applied. It is important for the children to put the word in a sentence so that it is clear they understand the meaning of the word.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to ask any member of the year 2 team.
