Mr Hewlett

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to class 6L's page. Here you can find updates on trips, activities and events throughout the school year and receive updates on what year 6 will be learning about each half term.

English: We will be learning all about traditional Mexican tales and researching the colourful and lively Dia de los Muertos festival to write factual reports on the celebration. Our class book is Holes by Louis Sachar where we will learn all about Stanley Yelnats, who has been sent to Camp Green Lake for bad boys and is forced by the warden to digs holes in the desert every day.

Maths: The pupils will be working on a variety of written and mental arithmetic methods involving multiplication, addition, subtraction and division. We will be covering a range of place value, number and geometry topics and applying these to a range of arithmetic and reasoning problems.

Science: Our topic is all about light this half term. We will be studying how our eyes work, how light travels and how shadows are formed. Year 6 will be researching, creating and carrying out our own investigations based on the topic to answer the questions we have.

Theme work: Our topics this half term is Hola Mexico! We will be learning all about Mexico’s language, culture, geography and rich history. We will start with finding about traditional Mexican festivals and the ancient civilisation of the Mayans: who they were, how they lived and what eventually happened to them.

Using the internet at home or visiting the local library would allow your child to research and increase their learning of the curriculum in the Year 6 curriculum.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. I would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading.

May we remind you that homework is given out on a Friday and should be handed in on a Monday or Tuesday by the latest. PE will be on Wednesday and pupils will need their kits and suitable footwear when taking part
