Year 5C 2018 - 2019

Miss Constance

Mr Wall

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to Year 5!

This year, the teaching staff in 5C are Miss Constance as the teacher and Mr Wall as the teaching assistant. We are looking forward to working with your children.

P.E. will take place on Monday mornings with Paco. Please make sure pupils bring a P.E. kit on this day, including suitable footwear.

Using the internet at home to help further research the topics the children are learning about at school would be a great aid for the children’s learning. As well as this, all pupils now have access to mathletics and Lexia, which they can access at home as well as in school.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. It is important that you listen to child reading at home at least 3 times per week and record this in their reading records. It will be helpful to ask your child questions about the text your child has read, and add a comment about their reading to their record. Having an adult listen to them reading will benefit your children immensely, helping them to make excellent progress. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you.

Children need to continue to practice their times tables knowledge at home so that they are completely confident in the use of their facts up 12 x 12 and can apply them in their Mathematics. Timestable facts will be tested on Fridays. Regularly practicing basic addition, subtraction and division will also help to speed up their recall and aid their progression.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by the Tuesday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and will be tested on a Friday.

English

This half term we will be reading Tom's Midnight Garden. This will provide the stimulus for our writing; the children will be creating their own portal stories using the features that make Tom's Midnight Garden an effective tale. Once this is complete, we will be moving on to writing to inform using our topic of Time Traveller.

Maths

The children will be refining their place value skills, using numbers with up to 7 digits, including numbers with three decimal places. As well as this, we will focus on the functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in maths, reviewing the different methods used for each. We will use fluency, reasoning, and problem solving to consolidate all learning.

Science

As our topic this term is Time Traveller, we will begin the year by looking at life cycles. Starting with the Human Timeline, we will learn about the differences in the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects, and birds. After this, we will investigate the process of reproduction of some plants and animals. Throughout the year, we will hone in on the skills needed to work scientifically.

Computing

Children will be making their own interactive games during the course of the term as well as undertaking learning to provide a greater knowledge and depth over E-Safety.

Theme

Our topic this half term is Time Traveller. We will be investigating how our local area has changed over time, how it could change in the future, and what we can do to make a positive impact. In addition to this, we will investigate how time zones work.

PSHE/RE

Children will be learning about Why do some people believe in God?

P.E

Children will be partaking in PE lessons every Monday. They will be learning about attacking and defending.

Spanish

Children will be learning about a variety of different topics in Spanish throughout the year, beginning with colours, numbers, introductions and the local area.

Music

Children will be receiving specialist music lessons allowing them wider opportunities to learn a new instrument this term.
