Year 4J 2016 - 2017

Miss Johnson

Mr Foster

Welcome to Year 4!

This year, the teaching staff in 4J are Miss Johnson as the teacher and Mr Foster as the teaching assistant.

Welcome back, here you will find information on what the children are learning about in the Summer Term.

Children will be learning about a range of different styles of writing this term. We will theme our writing around the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. In particular, we will be focusing on fiction texts and writing our own mythical stories.

This term we will be learning or mastering our knowledge of:

  • Fractions and decimals
  • Measures
  • Shape and area
  • Addition and Subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Time

Please ensure that your child practises times table facts at home and uses mathematics based apps and games.

The children will be learning about Animals and their habitats this half term and will be carrying out investigations over the course of the half term. Children will be improving their enquiry skills by observing different invertebrates in their habitats and also by completing a local habitat survey. After the half term the children will be looking at sound.

Our topic this half term is Vikings. Our learning will include researching Viking life, using our map skills to look at where the Vikings came from and participating in a ‘Viking Day’. Next half term we will follow this up with learning about the Anglo-Saxons.

Children will be partaking in swimming lessons every Monday and also will receive training from the school sports coach on a Tuesday.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. I would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Please make comments about your child’s reading and sign your child’s home reading diary each night and similarly, we shall make comments back. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you.

It is important for the children to also practice and embed their times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12 at home! This will greatly enhance and assist their learning in school.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by the Tuesday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and then will be tested on a Friday.

Children can change reading books on a Monday, as this is when year 4 has time in the library. This is great opportunity for the children to choose books they are interested in and have some personal reading time.
