Welcome back to Year 4!

This year the teaching staff in 4G are Mr Gibson and the teaching assistant is Mrs Owusu.

Welcome back, here you will find information on what the children are learning about in the Spring Term.

English

Children will be learning about a range of different styles of writing this term in school. We will theme our writing this half term around the topic Misty Mountain Sierra. In particular, we will be focusing on non-fiction texts and writing our own non-chronological reports about different mountain ranges.

Maths

This term we will be looking at:

  • Fractions and decimals
  • Division
  • Position and direction
  • Area and Multiplication

Please ensure that your child practises times table facts at home and uses mathematics based apps and games

Science

The children will be learning about States of Matter this half term and will be carrying out investigations over the course of the half term. Children will be improving their enquiry skills by looking at liquids, gases and solids.

Theme

Our topic this half term is Misty Mountain Sierra. This will include researching different mountain ranges, learning how the water cycle works, understanding different climates and making our own mountain in art and design.

P.E

Children will be partaking in swimming lessons every Monday and also will receive training from the school sports coach on a Tuesday.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. I would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Please make comments about your child’s reading and sign your child’s home reading diary each night and similarly, we shall make comments back. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you.

It is important for the children to also practice and embed their times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12 at home! This will greatly enhance and assist their learning in school.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by the Tuesday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and then will be tested on a Friday.
