Year 4 2019 - 2020

Miss Kerrison

Welcome to Year 4!

This year the teaching staff are:

4D - Mr Dean and Miss Shelmani

4K – Miss Kerrison and Mr Foster

Welcome to Year 4 at Ashbury Meadow! Here you will find information on what the children are learning about this term.

  • Children will need their swimming kit on Mondays.
  • Children will need their PE kit on Tuesdays. Please make sure your child comes to school in school uniform. They will be given time to get changed for P.E.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. We would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text they have read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading.

Please make comments about your child’s reading and sign your child’s home reading diary each night. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you. Reading Records should be in school every day as children will regularly be able to change their home reading books.

Times tables

It is important for the children to also practice and embed their times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12 at home! Children will continue to use Times Table Rockstars in school and at home. Completing Times Table Rockstars activities daily will greatly enhance and assist their learning in school. At the end of the year, Year 4 pupils will complete a national times table test assessing recall of times table facts up to 12 x 12.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and is expected to be returned by the Tuesday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and then will be tested on a Friday. Also, Children can access Lexia and Mathletics at home.

This half term we will learning about information texts. By the end of the half-term, we will be writing an information text about how the Romans changed Britain.

This term we will be learning or mastering our knowledge of:

  • Geometry: identifying and plotting co-ordinates and lines of symmetry
  • Measurement: area of rectilinear shapes
  • Number: finding 1000 more or less than a given number
  • Division: dividing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number using a formal written layout with no remainder

The children will be learning about States of Matter. The children will have the opportunity to carry out various investigations, focusing on studying how some materials can change state.

In Geography this half-term, we will be learning about Location and Map Work. We will learn how to use maps to locate the counties around Manchester, cities near Manchester, countries in Europe and capital cities in Europe. We will also learn the location and importance of the Earth’s Equator, Tropics and Hemispheres. Additionally, we will take part in an orienteering afternoon.

We will be learning about sculpture this half-term in art. We will create 3D features of a Roman town by assembling different materials into sculptures.
