Year 4 2019 - 2020

Miss Johnson

Welcome to Year 4!

This year the teaching staff are:

4J - Miss Johnson and Mr Charleson

4K – Miss Kerrison and Mr Foster

Welcome back to Ashbury Meadow, here you will find information on what the children are learning about in the Summer term.

Children will need their swimming kit on Mondays

Children will need their PE kit on Tuesdays

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. I would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Please make comments about your child’s reading and sign your child’s home reading diary each night and similarly, we shall make comments back. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you.

Year 4 has time in the library every Monday. This is great opportunity for the children to choose books they are interested in and have some personal reading time.

It is important for the children to also practice and embed their times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12 at home! This will greatly enhance and assist their learning in school.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected to be returned by the Tuesday. In addition to this, spellings will be given out on a Monday, and then will be tested on a Friday. Also, Children can access Lexia, Mathletics and Timestable Rockstars at home.

Reading Records need to be given in every Monday.

This half term we will theme our writing around the Vikings. In particular, we will be writing a journey story based on tales from 'Erik the Viking'. Towards the end of the half term we will be looking at explanation texts.

This term we will be learning or mastering our knowledge of:

  • Measures
  • Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000
  • Fractions

Please ensure that your child practises times table facts at home and uses mathematics based apps and games.

The children will be learning about 'States of Matter' and the water cycle. The children will have the opportunity to carry out various investigations, including how certain materials can change state. Then, next half term the children will be looking at sound and how it travels.

Our topic this half term is the Vikings. Our learning will include: who the Vikings were, why they settled in Britain and how they lived.
