Year 3F 2018 - 2019

Miss Fox

Welcome to year 3! We hope you all had a great summer and we are excited to welcome you back. We have some great lessons and topics to learn about this half term, including a trip to the recycling centre to learn about why and how we can recycle.

Supporting your child

Using the internet at home or visiting the local library would allow your child to research and increase their learning of the topics in the Year 3 curriculum.

Children in 3F will need their P.E. kits on Tuesdays.
Children in 3D will need their P.E. kits on Mondays.

All of the children are given home reading books to read at home. Please continue to listen to your child reading at home for ten minutes at least 3 times per week and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Please sign your child’s reading record each time you read with them and ensure they have this in school with them to change their book.

May we remind you that homework is given out on a Friday and should be handed in on a Monday. All homework should be completed without help where possible.

Spellings are handed out on Monday and should be practised every day to prepare for the test on Friday.
The children also do a times tables test every Monday. Please practise the relevant times tables (2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 8x, 6x) as much as you can. To practise both should only take 10 minutes a night.

As a parent or guardian of a child in Year 3, you are always welcome to speak to us at any time; we will try to be available outside at the beginning and end of the school day.

In this unit, the children will be reading the story Escape from Pompeii and learning the text map.

They shall write their own warning tales, innovating the characters and setting from this story.

We will also be writing a discussion text about the positives and negatives of living near a volcano.

In year 3 we shall be looking at the following topics

Place value (3 digit numbers)

Addition and subtraction (mentally and using the formal methods, for year 3 this is the column method)

We will also be continuing to focus on multiplication and division for our weekly x tables tests.

In science the children will be exploring Rocks. They will be finding out how different types of rocks and fossils are formed. We shall also be learning about different tectonic plate boundaries.

The children learn about e safety using Purple Mash which can be accessed from home using the log in which is stuck into the front page of children’s homework books.

Theme work: History, Geography, Art & D&T

The children will be focussing on the topic 'volcanoes'. This involves looking at how volcanoes are formed and what it is like to live in areas with volcanic activity
