Welcome to year 2

What will your child be learning this term?


This term in English we will be working on writing sentences and using accurate punctuation, some children will be learning how to use a comma in a list. We will be reading stories, poetry and writing an information book. The children will be trying to use more adventurous words in their writing. Please read with your child daily – if you would like a new book before we have chance to change at school – do not hesitate to ask for one


In maths we will be doing some work to help us remember our number bonds to 10 and 20 so they have a rapid recall of these facts. We will be learning about shapes and how to give directions. We will be learning how to add and subtract using a number line. We will be learning new mathematical words such as multiples.


Our Science topics this term Materials and Using electricity, we will be doing some investigations with materials and how to record what we know about them. In electricity we will be making simple circuits and making lamps to link with our Themed work.


Our theme work this term will be Toys we will be thinking about toys now and toys in the past. We will be designing and making a small puppet. After half term – historical figures – Florence Nightingale. We will be learning about what Florence did and also having a drama session.

Physical Education

We love PE in Year 2! We will be doing two different football sessions on Monday and on Thursday. Remember PE kit should be a plain white t shirt and black/blue shorts or leggings.

Information and Communication Technology

We will be working with Dazzle to create pictures, then we will be moving on to create a floor turtle and giving instructions. 


In Religious education we will be learning about Christianity and special places. This will include a visit to a local church. We will also be learning how to recognise our feelings and know some words to describe how we are feeling.


We will be learning some more spanish songs and games to encourage the children to love languages.

Homework and spelling

Homework will be given out on Thursdays please return homework on a Monday.

 I will also be sending out spellings on a Monday for the test on Friday.
