Year 2D 2017 - 2018

Miss Dempsey

Miss Miller

Welcome to year 2,

If you’re looking for what we are learning in the Autumn 1, you have come to the right place!

The Scented Garden

Our “WOW!” moment: Children will go on a school trip to Lyme Park where they will be taken on a tour of the gardens. The children will be encouraged to talk about how to look after plants and will have the opportunity to pot plants and even build dens!

In theme lessons: We will be learning about things we find in gardens, with a focus on plants. The children have already been asking lots of questions that we can explore. For example: What are plants like in different countries? What makes plants grow? Why do plants need water? We look forward to finding out the answers and more in our theme lessons.

The children will be developing their understanding of methods for calculating addition, subtraction, division and multiplication questions. They will be applying their understanding of these four operations to problem solving. We will begin by securing our understanding of 2 digit place value and move on to informal written methods of calculation (such as blank number lines and arrays). If you would like any information on how to help your child at home with their calculations please do not hesitate to ask a member of the year 2 team.

Please ensure that your child practises their number bonds to 20 (numbers that add up to 20) at home this term.

We will be innovating the traditional story ‘Jack in the Beanstalk’ this term. As a hook into the writing, the children will find a magic beanstalk growing in their classroom!

We will be beginning to use the year 2 writing skills this term. These include: securing the use of adjectives in our writing; developing the use of adverbs in a sentence and as openers; mastering punctuation at the start and end of sentences; and developing using a range of sentence types.

In Science we will be describing how plants grow, investigating what a plant needs for healthy growth and survival and learning about the plant life cycles.

Physical Education

We love PE in Year 2! This term we will be practising athletic skills. PE kits should be a plain white t shirt and black/blue shorts or joggers. Most of the lessons will be outside and so it is advisable to bring a sports jacket and joggers every week. PE kits should be in school every Tuesday.

A music teacher will be coming in to school to develop the children’s musical skills. We alternate music sessions every Wednesday between the two year 2 classes.

Homework and spelling

Homework is given out on Fridays. Please return homework on a Monday.

We send out spellings on a Monday for the test on Friday. It is important for the children to put the word in a sentence so that it is clear they understand the meaning of the word.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to ask any member of the year 2 team.
