Year 2C 2017 - 2018

Miss Crean

year two teacher

Miss Butterworth

Welcome to year 2,

If you’re looking for what we are learning in the first Summer term, you have come to the right place!

Towers, Turrets and Tunnels!

Our “WOW!” moment: Children will go on a school trip to Chirk Castle where they will be taken on a tour of the castle. The children will be encouraged to talk about how the castle was built, and what the reason for building the castle was.

In theme lessons: We will be learning about why we needed castles and what the purpose of tunnels and turrets are. The children have already been asking lots of questions that we can explore. For example: What are turrets for and do all castles have them? Why did we need castles and who lived in them? Who decides who lives in a castle? We look forward to finding out the answers and more in our theme lessons.

The children will be developing their understanding of methods for calculating addition, subtraction, division and multiplication questions. They will be applying their understanding of these four operations to problem solving. We will begin by securing our understanding of 2 digit place value and move on to informal written methods of calculation (such as blank number lines and arrays). If you would like any information on how to help your child at home with their calculations please do not hesitate to ask a member of the year 2 team.

Please ensure that your child practises their times tables (x2 x5 x10) at home this term.

We will be looking at writing a recount of our trip to Chirk Castle. As a hook into the writing, the children will be going on a magical space journey in the hall and exploring different things from Space!

We will be continuing to use the year 2 writing skills this term and further develop them. These include: securing the use of adverbs in our writing; developing the use of apostrophes for possession and contractions in a sentence; mastering punctuation at the start and end of sentences; and continuing to develop using a range of sentence types (exclamation, questions, statements and commands.)

In Science we will be looking at living things and their habitats.

Physical Education

We love PE in Year 2! This term we will be practising athletic skills. PE kits should be a plain white t shirt and black/blue shorts or joggers. Most of the lessons will be outside and so it is advisable to bring a sports jacket and joggers every week. PE kits should be in school every Tuesday.

A music teacher will be coming in to school to develop the children’s musical skills. We alternate music sessions every Wednesday between the two year 2 classes.

Homework and spelling

Homework is given out on Fridays. Please return homework on a Monday.

We send out spellings on a Monday for the test on Friday. It is important for the children to put the word in a sentence so that it is clear they understand the meaning of the word.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to ask any member of the year 2 team.
