Welcome to Year 1.

We would like to wish you a warm welcome back to Ashbury Meadow. Here you will find information about what we are learning in the Summer term.

Children will be building on their sentence skills: writing in sentences using capital letters and full stops while forming their letters correctly. We will be using adjectives, conjunctions and adverbs in our sentences. Children will be using punctuation like question marks and exclamation marks.

We will be starting to use prepositions like inside, outside, towards, across and under.

Our literacy topic is stories with repeated patterns. The book we are focussing on is 'Zog'.

Please read with your child at home for 10 minutes every night. Reading and talking about books will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading. Please make comments about your child’s reading in your child’s home reading diary and we will make comments back. A suggested list of comments was given out at our welcome assembly but if you would like another copy please ask.  Home reading diaries are the best way to communicate progress and concerns regarding your child’s reading and we hope to use them effectively with you.

Why not visit the library and find a new book to read?

If you would like to volunteer to read in school with the children please let us know.

The maths units we will be looking at this half term are:

-Number and statistics

-Position and direction

Our topic this term is ‘Bright Lights, Big City’. The children will be incorporating history, geaography and art and design in this unit focussed on the cities Manchester and London. Some of these aspects will include the Queen, night city scapes and map work.

We are very excited to be holding a tea party for the Queen!

In science we will be learning about materials and their properties we will be experimenting with the properties of different materials. We will be finding out which materials are natural and man made.
