Welcome to Year 1.

We would like to wish you a warm welcome back to Ashbury Meadow. Here you will find information about what we are learning in the Autumn term.

The children will be working on sentence structure, using finger spaces, fullstops, capital letters and sounding out what they will write. They will improve their work by adding adjectives and reading back their writing. In Autumn the children will be focusing on writing instructions and recounts of familiar events. They will be improving these texts using adjectives and then re-writing their own versions.

The children will be learning about place value and improving their skills in addition and subtraction, using and applying these skills in practical problems solving situations. Please ensure that your child practises number bonds to 10, 20 at home and uses Topmarks as much as possible in the evening and at the weekend.

We will be learning about seasonal changes. Please talk about the seasons and what we wear for them.

The children are studying about the ‘past’ this term and will be making ‘memory boxes’ to keep special things. They will be looking at changes within living memory. In geography the children will be looking around the school grounds.

Children will be learning how to log-in to Purplemash and all about on-line safety.

Further information

Using the internet at home or visiting the local library would allow your child to research and increase their learning of the curriculum in the Year 1 curriculum.

Children will need their PE kits every day in school. Can you make sure that this is named.

Please make sure your child comes to school with a water bottle. Please can you make sure their name is written clearly on the bottle. We have limited water fountains in the Year One areas.

All the children are given home reading books to read at home. Once read at home their books are changed. Please make comments about your child’s reading and sign your child’s home reading diary when read with them and similarly, we shall make comments back. We would appreciate it if you could continue to listen to your child reading at home for 10 minutes per night and ask your child questions about the text your child has read. Having an adult or older sibling listen to them reading will benefit your child immensely and help them to make excellent progress in reading and writing. Home reading diaries are excellent ways of communicating progress/concerns regarding your child’s reading between parents/guardians and staff in school and we look forward to using them effectively with you. If you would like to volunteer reading in school with the children then please let us know.

May we remind you that homework is given out on a Friday and should be handed in on a Monday at the latest.

Spellings will be handed out on a Monday. Please help your children to learn them as they will be tested on Fridays. This will also help in their reading and writing.  If you would like to know the score please ask their teacher at the end of the day.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the year 1 team.
